ipod, Zune, Creatives, it's gotten to the point where I don't really know what to label them anymore. Anyways, I need to buy one of these thingies before I leave for Japan. I've had the ipod mini back in the day and it was okay but the creative zen x-fi I really liked overall. I looked at my friend's Zune and it seemed spiffy too. I was wondering who's got what and if anybody has a suggestion what product I should get.
It should:
- have a decent program to upload music/movies
- have a really good screen for movies
- decent battery life
- small enough so that if I put it in my gym shorts pocket it doesn't look like I got a robot boner

As much as i hate Apple products, I would say the ipod wins
My ipod touch is really one of best things ive ever bought. I use it everyday because it does so much more than just play music

iPod by far. The equalizer on the iPod is phenomenal and the playback, apps, etc are amazing if you get a touch. If you dont get a touch the iPod itself is still fantastic and worth every penny. If you dont like using iTunes, get over it. iTunes is one of the best music players online and allows you to edit id3 tags with ease, add album artwork, and equalize everything. If you don't like its memory footprint while playing music, use Winamp or whatever else you could possibly use.

Zune HD is without a doubt the best thing since sliced bread in the portable music category. Plus you can get the subscription service and download any song you want.
iTunes took 45 minutes to install on my gaming desktop and almost all my games load up faster than it does. No program that heavy and slow should ever been required to use a portable player. If not for that and the DRM, I'd recommend Apple but since you're buying the entire package I have to say Zune.

Don't know anything about Creatives, and while the Zune is cool if you just want to play music, then definitely go with the Zune. The iPod does a little bit of everything and it does it really well. I love the way you get music with Zune and at the same time I don't since you have to keep your subscription to keep your music. With iTunes you pay once and the song is yours for eternity.
I'd say you have some choices, if you already have a huge music library and don't plan on adding anything to it, you could safely go with the Zune or Creative, if the price is cheaper. If prices are the same across each, go with the iPod because it is easily more bang for your buck. I think technical-wise they are probably all about the same, but not too sure on that.
If you don't have a lot of music and want to buy it, then I think you should go with Zune or iPod, if you want to pay a subscription to get your music and then lose it if you decide you don't want to pay anymore then go Zune. Or if you want to do a kind of pay as you go and keep forever music then go with iPod.
If you want a device that does more than just play music then your only option is iPod Touch, and trust me when I say that like Adam37 that I use mine every day.

um you can still buy the songs with zune and its the same pricing as apple. really there are no downsides to the zune other than the lack of apps that the ipod touch has.
here is a comparison: http://www.pcmag.com...d=243285,00.asp
they are pretty equal (except the apps as i said) but I still give zune the edge because of itunes. itunes is possibly the worst piece of software ever written (unless you are on a mac, where it actually works properly). apple's coders for PC are lazy and the pc version is a shitty port full of bugs and memory leaks. zune gives you the versatility of using whatever software you want to transfer music to/from your device.

That I can agree with you on, iTunes on a PC is lame, and yes Apple PC coders can suck my dong...
I had though that when you subscribed to get the Zune songs that you had to stay subscribed to keep the song...

You have the option with the Zune to go either way. You can buy your songs, DRM free, and keep them forever just like iTunes or you can get the monthly subscription which includes store credit for 5-10 free songs per month.

My friend has a Zune and we found out that it syncs with windows 7 like a beast. It loaded every song he had onto his new PC almost instantly and being able to navigate through playlists, artists, albums, etc was easy. I have Vista unfortunately, but if they programed the Zune to have the same relationship with that os then I'd definitely go with zune.
So DRMing is like renting songs I take it? I can't err, upload my music from another source now?
And thanks for the link nickname. I think I'll take the Zune now.

Vista won't get those features because how Windows7 interacts with portable devices has been completely redesigned.

DRM'ing with music typically means you can only play it within the player your bought it and on devices that it approves of. It's stupid and is being phased out by the music industry because it's driving legit customers to piracy because the music they bought isn't really theirs.
