FTE Kaz-Ka Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 Your right about this game Josh, pure perfection. I loved it and am playing through it again, Im trying to get the Altair costume. Quote
Ephraim Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 Bump!!!!! I am considering buying this game, but am still hesitant for a number of reasons. For one thing, I just know the story will be long, complicated, and completely nonsensical. Also, I assume about 50% of my time will be spent watching cut scenes explaining the plot and I still won't get it. I know this because I played all the other games and still have no idea who the Patriots are supposed to be. Something about White House documents coming to life and Americans getting *edited*ed off at the Chinese and Russians. Also, I've heard a lot of people complaining that the action segments suck out loud. I know that in all the other games, if a guard saw me, I might as well drop a grenade on top of Snake, because it's pretty much over from there. Still, for all their warts, I've liked the other games. That is, I like when the stealth bits go off flawlessly. I just don't like having to pace back and forth for a half-hour to figure out what the hell is going on or wait for the guards to kill me because I can't find a locker or something. I'm not saying the games suck; I just don't think they're TEH BEST GAMES EVER PERFECT10PERFECT10!! What do you guys think? Quote
Cacophony Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 I started playing it at my friends house Saturday and played until right after the battle of Screaming Mantis (last act of the game). Thus far I feel like I'm watching a very long, but exciting, movie that is broken up by the occasional section of gameplay to keep me from getting too annoyed. If you are a fan of the story and the series, then the cut scenes are awesome. Only a couple of them feel like they are dragging on and usually by the point they're nearly over or offer some sort of distraction like being able to control the Mk. II during the briefing. MGS4 also starts answering all the questions without providing too many brand new ones, so if you've been waiting for the answers this will give them to you. (Also, if you dont at least have some idea of who the Patriots are after the last 2 games you probably weren't paying very close attention. Because I wasnt too surprised when they finally explained how the Patriots was started. Then again, I'm a rabid fan of the series and make sure I pat attention to every detail in order to try and answer things.) Also, the CODECs usually have movies added on now, which makes it sooooo much better then sitting in place for 45 minutes looking at green tinted images or black and white photos. While sneaking is almost entirely optional I really don't think the action segments are that bad. Especially if you are used to how it was in the past games when things got tough. I find myself, more often than not, blasting away at things instead of sneaking and I've been having almost no trouble at all with the controls. Sure, they arent as good as a game that is supposed to be a 3rd person shooter would be, but I've certainly played worse. Anyway, I'm looking forward to going over and beating it finally and seeing the end of the series. Quote

Cacophony Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 If you've played the older games than you'll have an idea of how cutscene heavy the series is. But, MGS4 so far feels like it is way heavier on the cutscenes this time with not nearly enough gameplay. I think that, for me at least, there is almost no replay value. And this is coming from someone who played MGS2 probably around 30+ times and MGS3 about 10+ times. Quote
Ephraim Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 I know how the Philosophers were formed, and I know that the Patriots stole a bunch of money from the Russians and Chinese... somehow. Now, how we got from that to dead people with presidential names kidnapping Olga (long-russian-name)'s daughter and hiding a big aircraft under an oil rig, I'm not so sure. Now, I don't think the games are bad; just terribly overrated. Here's what I think the series does well: they have an excellent sense of presentation and atmosphere. Even if the story is unforgivably aweful, it is still presented in such a dramatic way that I usually don't care and enjoy myself. I'm just not a fan of having to work really hard to understand a game's plot. That's probably why I've never completed a Final Fantasy. Also, I think the stealth is cool, when it works. Quote
Cacophony Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 Most of the long dead Presidential name mumbo jumbo I always figured was mostly BS, meant to throw people off of their tail. Which turns out to be mostly true, though it turns out to be other stuff in the end too. Anyhow, it's all explained in 4. Olga Gurlukovich (say it in a Solid Snake voice, much more fun). I can see that though. I've know quite a few people who don't like the games solely based off the fact that the story is so convoluted at times (ok, most of the time). Quote
Ephraim Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 I know I'm eventually going to get this game, play it, and mostly-like it. There are just a few things keeping me from going for it. I've heard a little bit about the plot and am not pleased. One of the first bits of info I got was about the Beauty and the Beast Squad. It seemed a little wierd to me. What are the odds that the five soldiers that were selected to wield powerful robot-suites would all be female? I know there are plenty of female soldiers out there, but they are still a minority in just about every army, so it's strange that not a single male would get in the squad somewhere. I also heard some of their origin stories. They were unspeakably sickening and totally convoluted. Now then, I got curious and did a little research, braving those horrible spoilers. It suddenly made sense that all the robot-soldiers are female because all of Ocelot's private soldiers are female. Why? I'm guessing/hoping it's explained in the game, but if it turns out the only reason is because Ocelot wanted to be around lots and lots of women at all times, I'm going to introduce my palm to my forehead. Admitedly, this is all minutia and won't really matter, but I consider it a taste of what's to come: as bad and confusing a story as ever. Quote
Cacophony Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 As of the point of the game I'm at so far, there is no explanation for the female centered Ocelot PMC. Though, personally I've wondered if it wasnt because the female body is better adapted to the nanomachines or perhaps he just wanted his soldiers to be more agile and quick, since they are very much like the Tengu's from MGS2 with their bouncing about and clinging to walls. As for the Beauty and the Beast all being females, again I figured that just stuck with the Beauty part of the titles. So, they avoided males. And yes, the backstories for the members are generally *edited*ed up. And it actually just gets more *edited*ed up the farther you move up the hierarchy of the squad. Makes the past FOXHOUND, Dead Cell, and Cobras look like pansies compared to them.) That's just my opinion though. I was actually hoping it might be explained at some point myself since it does mention briefly that his soldiers are taken from the best of the best of the PMC's. But, all PMC's seem to be male up until Ocelot's. So, simply an unwillingness to make diverse character models for the PMC's, or what? All this talk is making me really want to go beat it now! Quote
Ephraim Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 perhaps he just wanted his soldiers to be more agile and quick, since they are very much like the Tengu's from MGS2 with their bouncing about and clinging to walls. That wouldn't explain an exclusively female army. Apparently, if a totally average male and female work out at the same rate, the male will be quicker and more agile, but the female will be more flexible. That isn't supposed to be a dirty joke or anything. I heard it from a fitness instructor. Of course, he was kind of a weird guy, so... You know what? Never mind. As for the Beauty and the Beast all being females, again I figured that just stuck with the Beauty part of the titles. So, they avoided males. So, the selection process for Ocelot's inner-circle of private soldiers is based entirely upon a flare for literary puns? Dammit, Kojima! That's just stupid! And yes, the backstories for the members are generally *edited*ed up. And it actually just gets more *edited*ed up the farther you move up the hierarchy of the squad. If these women had such screwed up childhoods, wouldn't they seek out, like, counceling or something. Given the choice, I think they would choose therapy to healing-through-robot-armor any day. Maybe I'm looking at this a little too closely, but it seems sorta unlikely. Quote
Cacophony Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 So, the selection process for Ocelot's inner-circle of private soldiers is based entirely upon a flare for literary puns? Dammit, Kojima! That's just stupid! Considering the naming of every major villain in these game seems to have some theme to it (Decoy Octupus was the disguise expert, Psycho Mantis the psychic, Fortune was 'lucky', Vamp was bisexu...I mean a 'vampire', Fury was *edited*ed, The End was old, etc etc) does it really surprise you? Quote
Ephraim Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 Considering the naming of every major villain in these game seems to have some theme to it (Decoy Octupus was the disguise expert, Psycho Mantis the psychic, Fortune was 'lucky', Vamp was bisexu...I mean a 'vampire', Fury was *edited*ed, The End was old, etc etc) does it really surprise you? Well, when it came to Foxhound, Dead Cell, and the Cobra Unit, I would assume that the team members were enlisted first, then a theme was chosen. Like, Foxhound got together and said, "Hey, let's have animal names! The psycic guy's mask makes him look like a bug, so he's Psyco Mantis. The big guy has birds following him and he carries a big gun, so he's Vulcan Raven. How fun!" When it came to Beauty and the Beast, a theme was chosen first (Beautiful women in beastly armor), then soldiers were chosen to fit the theme. That isn't efficient at all. Wow. This thread has gotten all kinds of messed up. Skrew it. I'll just play the game some time and figure it all out later. Quote
Cacophony Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 I'll just play the game some time and figure it all out later. Sounds like a plan! Quote
Ephraim Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 Alright, alright, alright. One more comment, then I'll try desperately try to forget this whole blasted subject. After giving it some thought, the best explaination for an all-female army would be the female body being better equipped to handle nanomachines. Ocelot thought an all-female army would be the easiest to cybernetically control. Realizing that all his soldiers are female, Ocelot decided that his elite inner-circle unit should have a clever feminine theme. Thus, Beauty and the Beast. Also, I tried to remember and explain the storyline to all the games to myself as a refresher. I got as far as the end of the tanker mission in MGS2 before exclaiming, "*edited* it! What a terrible story!" and dropping the project altogether. There. I'm done. Goodnight, internet. Also, http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/vie...al-Gear-Solid-4 Quote
josrocket Posted August 18, 2008 Author Report Posted August 18, 2008 Yes the overall MGS story can be confusing so thats why konami released a MGS Database...It is a library of info, timelines, characters, and relationships...This was done inorder to free up any confusion since its the last MG game with snake. Quote
Bitey Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 Yeah definitely check out the database any questions I had were easily cleared up simply by looking for the name or group I had a question about. I thought the MGS story in general was better and more elaborate than most movies out there, I'd like to see Hideo direct a movie he definitely has the stuff to do it, I guess some people just don't like to take the time to enjoy learning story, its just shoot em up bang bang gimme now now cause I am impatient.
