The prizes vary from games, gift cards, novelty and collective items. The event will be held at Western Carolina University at the University Center in the Illusions room and Grandroom. The doors open at 12pm and the first tournament starts at 2pm. The LAN lasts until midnight and the last tournament should have ended by that time.

Sorry for not posting the rules sooner, I forgot they were lost in the outage.

If something seems wrong with them, or you want to add something, please say so and I will be as accommodating as possible.

TOURNAMENT WILL BE PLAYED IN L4D2 SCAVENGE MODE.

1. TEAMS

a. Total overall players must be divisible by 4. Unless everyone is ok with bots... why, I can't imagine.

b. Each player can select a partner to accompany them throughout the tournament as last time.

c. Player pairs will be paired again with another pair to create a team of 4. Pear.

d. Pair pairing will be randomized by hat draw. Bear.

2. ROUNDS

-- Warm-up rounds will be played

a. If 2 teams, both teams will play to best of 5 on a map of their choosing, or a random map if neither can decide.

b. If 3 teams, each team will play against the other to best of 3, top two will then play to best of 5.

c. If 4 teams, each team will randomly play another to best of 5. Winners will then play to best of 5 again.

Note: 3 teams will take a longer time to play out than 4 teams since each round will be played in series, not parallel. Hence the shorter rounds.

REMEMBER TO START DOWNLOADING L4D2 AS SOON AS YOU GET TO THE LAN.

DON'T LET YOUR FELLOW SURVIVORS/ZOMBIES DOWN SINCE THEY WONT BE ABLE TO PLAY IF YOU CAN'T. (Rule 1.a)

Hey everybody, sorry I havent been posting as much latley but Ive been pretty busy this summer so I hope you all understand. Anyway, I figured Id drop in today and give everybody a heads up and a few reminders. First off, is ValleyBalleyWhoo, which we are going to be running a table at this year (I believe, Im going to double check on that but Im sure we are). We will be out there for a little while having some video game quizes with prizes so come on out and show your support.

I also want to inform everyone that our first meeting will take place on September 10th, so I want MANY people to show up to this, elcetions will be held, and as always, it should be a fun meeting (and Adam, if you could post this on the homepage, I would be very greatful). And as far as LAN dates go, Im still debating on them but I should have a concrete decision by 5:00pm today so keep checking back.

I hope to make this upcoming semester a fun and exciting one for all of you and I hope you all stay safe during the summer. And dont forget, keep playing them games!

This quote is from a topic in the Playstation Discussion section of the boards, which is where I was going to reply to it initially, but I thought it better to make a seperate topic in LAN Events since I ended up covering so many issues. This isn't just me ranting or something, I want this to be a discussion topic first off. It just happens to be that I have alot to say at once about this.

Lately, the tournament list format for consoles has grown to 6-7 games being held at one event, in the interest of diversity. For the most part this format has given us two fighters, two FPSs, and two Misc. games per event. Sounds fair on the surface, right? Instead, this mix has brought us a great many conflicts over the past year, with two different crowds butting heads while casual LAN attendants' interests have slowly been pushed out of the way.

--------------------

***Remember that the following is my OPINION of why certain *edited* keeps happening. I'm starting by generalizing the club's members into categories, which are true for a large number of us. Don't anyone get offended, now.

--------------------

I'm part of our Fighting game crowd - we don't participate in the club's PC side that much, and we have regular contact with each other to gather and play games often (ex: Saturday mini LANs). Pretty much all of us reside on campus, so it's not like traveling to the LANs is a chore for us. Our tournaments have the potential to start and end quickly, but usually get drawn out because of one or two people who are stuck in an FPS match for half an hour.

Our FPS group is more connected to the PCs than the Fighters are. Alot of them are on campus, but there are some that come down from App and other locations. FPS tournaments are longer and drawn out by nature, due to having so many skill factors in their gameplay. They can get behind because of Fighting tournaments as well, when someone's on a good winning streak.

Our casual group doesn't give a *edited*, they just want to play some games. Most of them don't care about winning *edited* either. They expect to come to a LAN for free play and a good time; alot of them are on campus, but there are also alot of people that take road trips to WCU just for these events. Lately they've been shafted in the free play department, especially in our latest LAN. The only free play I was aware of was on the Wiis while I was waiting for Melee/Brawl entrants to get out of other tournaments, some slight Misc. games on Merit's PS3, and some Wheel of Fortune on Josh's PS3 after everyone *edited*ing left.

--------------------

So what does that have to do with the big picture at the actual event?

--------------------

The general view on running our console tournaments have turned into a "let them do it, I'm only worried about my own tournament" mindset. This is what causes all of our problems. With three different tournament organizers trying to get people sat down for their games at once, we had a *edited*load of conflicts at the last LAN where certain people were busy and unavailable for HOURS. The Melee tournament started at 2:00 PM on schedule, but ended at what, *edited*ing 7:00 PM? That was horrible. The other main problem was the amount of systems we hogged for tournaments, as I mentioned. So many people had asked me when tournaments were going to end, then left because they didn't want to wait so long with nothing to do. This must have been a bad impression on the Freshman that attended, since we put hundreds of flyers in their dorms and delivered a casually boring event. I hope nobody that drove a long way to be there was dissapointed (but to be honest, most off-campus members are PC gamers, and I heard their side ran quite smoothly last time).

--------------------

So what's your bright idea?

--------------------

Well I'm not saying that my suggestions are "right" for the club, but we definitely do need a console-side overhaul. We've grown, and we have divided interests as to what we really want to achieve at a LAN event. We should all remember that the original intention is to host a good time for anyone that attends, and not simply to compete for prizes. With that said, I do have a few ideas on how to improve the way we run *edited*.

The first option that comes to mind is, hold less tournaments. We've ALWAYS run behind in tournaments for the reasons above, but they would become dealable if we only held, say, 4 console tournaments for the whole event. I'm not saying drop our favorite games, either. My suggested tourny layout would involve two fighting games and two FPSs - one new release, and one known popular game each. I don't believe we need any Misc. tournaments personally, since the casual demographic is just as happy jumping from station to station of free play. If we started both New Releases early in the day it would attract new members and encourage people to show up early, and those of us who come for our most popular tournaments (like SC4 and Gears 2? iunno) are most likely to stay the whole event anyway, so we can leave those for later in the day. This also allows us leeway to improve the rules a bit in certain tournaments, since some were originaly designed around tight time constraints. It's a great improvement all around the way I look at it.

If people still want to hold so many tournaments, then I would suggest something that some of you probably wouldn't like. That is, holding the Fighting tournaments on another date in the Central Multipurpose room. This fixes the major issue of people being tied up in an FPS/PC game and holding up the Fighters, allowing us to hold double elimination tournaments fluidly without worries of a delay. I believe this wouldn't be much of a hassle, since our Fighter demographic is pretty much entirely on campus, and we gather on a regular basis anyway to free play. It could be a true mini LAN this way, possibly held Friday night before the main LAN. We might want to alter the method of entree fees if we did this, but we could always just keep track of who payed and let them in at the main LAN for free. I doubt anyone who would attend the mini LAN would skip the main LAN either, since there are more reasons to enjoy it than just tournaments.

Anyway, discuss and post your opinions or ideas about what we could do in the future. I know that we can do better to make the event enjoyable to everyone.

Ok before all you guys send me to the firing squad, please read all of this.

Ok, I have this idea that I want to implement into the constitution because I have been thinking about it for a while. And the reason I believe it should go into the constitution is because, even after we are all gone, this would be a great way to prevent biased from hurting our attendees at our LAN. Ok, so here we go.....

On the Fence Rule

When attendance is taken at our LANs (for example, our last LAN), we will take the two games that had the lowest attendance and say they are "on the fence". While these games (for example from the last LAN GoW2 and SF4 for consoles) are on the fence, they will be allowed to be voted in again. BUT if either GoW2 or SF4 were to have the lowest or second lowest attendance again, they would NOT be allowed to be voted back into the LANs again. But if the game does make a resurgance after this rule is implemented, then this rule for that game will dissappear and it will not be "on the fence" anymore until it gets low attendance again. This would keep things fresh and allow new games to be played that we have not played at the LANs yet.

Now before all of you guys who love Gears 2 yell "foul", listen up. I know you guys love this game, hell I do to, its a great game. And I know that you guys blame its low attendance at the last LAN on what happened at our first LAN last semester (the rules having to be changed and it almost not being finished). But you have to look at it from the rest of the clubs perspective. We only agreeded to do 6 games that LAN and Gears 2 was not originally voted in, so to start off, it honestly shouldnt have been promoted as a tournament game to begin with. But, we did it anyway, and people got mad about it, but oh well, its like I use to hear from all of the members of the club my freshman year "If it isnt voted in, tough *edited*, it shouldnt be a tournament game, you can free play it". Now again, Im not trying to hate on anyone because, like I said, I think Gears 2 is great, hell any game with a gun that has a chainsaw on it is awesome in my book. But if a game is not voted in after we initalize how many tournament games will be played at the LANs , I WILL NOT allow another game to be a "small" tournament, because we wind up arguing if it doesnt go the way it was planned. Its not fair to everyone else that wanted their game voted in, but it didnt happen.

And all I got to say about Street Fighter 4 is "Dont let the door hit your *edited* on the way out lol j/k". Honestly, I hope it goes but if it doesnt oh well, I hold no grudge against this game after seeing some tourney vids of it from EVO 2009.

So how did y'all like how teams were made this past time?

LAN 2009.2

Teams were made by playing a round and the scores were split up to build the 4 teams. Simply looked at the scores list and went 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4... all 1's were on same team,, exc... exc..

LAN 2009.1

Teams were made by first asking how well one though they played (1-10 scale) and tried my best to make even teams. each of the top scores were split up, each of the noob scoors were split up,, exc, exc..

Suggestions for next go around?

For those of you attending the LAN, please look over my proposed itinerary and make comments suggestions and help me out if i missed something.

First note, nothing is final until the 19th of March.

Second note, Lan is on Saturday the 21st of March, and TF2 will be from 4:30 PM - 7:30 PM

I plan on having 4 teams. Team size will be determined by the number of sign ups in first come first serve. unless everyone agrees, i dont plan on letting team sizes be unbalanced. (AKA, we get 26 ppl signed up, only the first 24 will be played to make a even 6 player teams)

Round 1

team 1 vs team 2 -> team 1 wins

team 3 vs team 4 -> team 3 wins

Round 2

team 1 vs team 3 -> team 1 wins (team 1 advances to final)

team 2 vs team 4 -> team 2 wins (team 4 eliminated

round 3

team 2 vs team 3 -> winner advances to final

team 1 vs team 4 on some fun map just for fun or they can opt not to play

Round 4

team 1 vs winner of team 2 vs team 3

Maps need 4, suggest

Currently the wcu servers set up with GravelPit, DustBowl, GoldRush, 2Fort, so might be picking some of these maps as this is what the population currently plays on. I would like to replace goldrush with Granary for the tourry. the maps can really be a last minute thing, so what do yall wanna play?

Time

Time alloted 3hrs

4 Rounds @ 30mins "in game" time limit

Setting up teams = 10-15 minutes

Getting into servers = 10 minutes

Announcing winners between matches = 10 minutes

Tie-Breakers = 15 minutes

Total: 2.9hrs - AKA, You don't have time to *edited* around, i tryed to account for all time and with using max time on everything it should not go over the 3hrs alloted.. (thou it some how always does) If you see any problems with this, or if i missed something please point it out.

Upgrades/Unlockables

All items are allowed if you have them unlocked.

Class Limit Structure

if 5 or less per team only 1 person per class.

-or-

if more than 5 per team class limits are as followed:

2 - Soldiers

2 - Scouts

2 - Pyros

2 - Sniper

1 - Medic

1 - Heavy

1 - Spy

1 - Demoman

1 – Engineer

Tie Breaker

In the event of a even score the first team that scored will advance.

In the event both teams have a score of zero, one class will be selected that everyone must play. (open to anything here, so again suggestions welcomed)

TEAMS

Everyone's favorite

One cannot quantify that which is subjective. Skill is subjective to a large degree. You might know who the best player is but you typically have an extremely hard time in picking 5 people for 4 different teams and making sure their skill levels add up to match the other 3 teams skill levels (or whatever one wants to use to quantify it).

Someone always gets screwed.

average player skill levels that are impossible to determine. People get lucky, people have off days, people have on days, some are just absolutely bad at games. Balance cannot be achieved when you are basing it on skill. At the very least there will never be 4 even teams.

If you are gonna promote random teams, expect to be put on a *edited*ty team that will frustrate the crap out of you. Just like the CSS team balancer, teams will never be balanced, no matter how hard you try. The intention is sound but the method fails and frustrates many.

I have been saying it forever; we need gym-class style team picking. That way people can be on teams with friends and overall the teams would be mostly balanced. Sorry if you get picked last, but if you do, you probably already know you are terrible.

Pretty much everyone agrees with the above, that their is no way to balance 4 team, its easier to win the powerball...

This is a LAN Party, HAVE FUN. If you dont come to these events to have a good time stick to online playing please.

Going to try something new this go around, tell me watcha think.

I am going to have a sign up sheet with me, everyone that would like to play need to report to me to sign them in.

On this sheet i will get your name and a skill level 1-10 and please be honest (if you say you are a 10 and suck, your team is more than likely going to loose), and i'll know if your a noob so dont be putting down a 1 when you know you haz t3h skillz. This is for you guys, if you lie/cheat, its simply not going to be ran fair. Again come to have fun and be honest.

-also-

i am allowing you to pick 1 friend you would like to play with. You both must come to me at the same time to sign in.

Once i get a filled sheet, its going to be gym-class style. I will pick 4 captions (i am not one to be fair), and we will sit together looking at the sheet and selecting teams we think is going to be the most balanced. (god have mercy on our soles). Once all said and done, the teams will be announced.

We will be having an informal get-together "mini-lan" this friday night starting at 6pm, running through around 12, in the Belk lab, room 358. This will be a BYOC (bring your own computer) event. We will be playing a mixture of CS 1.6, Left 4 Dead, and anything else that people want to play (maybe TF2).

There will be NO ENTRY FEE, but likewise there will be no prizes and/or refreshments. There is a drink machine in the belk lobby if you want to buy drinks and we may try to pool some money and order some pizzas if people want (I would), but otherwise if you don't want to pool money for pizza, make sure you eat beforehand.

This is just to be a good pre-exam stress reliever and a chance for the PC gamers to get together and have some fun. There won't really be a schedule or tournament planned, but we can make one up if people want. Basically, come have fun and play some games with your friends.

REPLY TO THIS TOPIC IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND. (I want to get an approximate headcount)
