Team Twiizers have finally release BootMii, the boot-level hack that allows homebrew applications to have direct and immediate control of the Wii before the Nintendo OS even starts loading. With this software mod installed, the Wii is virtually unbrickable.

When this hack was originally announced, Nintendo made changes to the Wii's hardware to prevent it and as a result any Wii newer than late 2008 will have to use a watered down OS hack that doesn't really give any benefit right now. If you're in this category they really don't recommend installing this right now.

The installer scans your Wii and determines what IOS version you have as well as which exploits it is still vulnerable to and uses the one(s) that are least invasive and destructive. It's surprisingly well thought out.

As a heads up, it does require the Homebrew channel. You can also execute the installer using the Twilight Princess hack. If you have System Menu 4.0 (the current version) you can use Banner Bomb to run the installer. Regardless of the launch method, the HackMii installer lets you install the BootMii hack, the Homebrew Channel, and DVDx (unlocks DVD movie functionality).

I used the Twilight Hack to install the Homebrew Channel last October. I haven't used Bannerbomb but it's the same principle and should be just as safe to use. They've also got a Smash Brothers Brawl crash to use as well but no one really knows when they'll release that to the public.

And yes, I'm enjoying this right now. I turn the Wii on and it goes stright to the Homebrew Channel.

w00t.. I did it and it's working really well... I already backed up my system so if i *edited* it up I can fix it!!!...

also how do you get bootmii to load the homebrew channel on startup?

I didn't see any config file that would do it but i am noob..

I got a bunch of it to work but it either won't recognize my drive or it crashes... stupid system menu 4.0

Yeah the steps they give for the 4.0 install include downgrading to cIOS36. Like I said, the scariest thing I've ever done to a console was downgrade my Wii. If you're going to do it I HIGHLY recommend doing it a different way than they said. When I get back Saturday night I can send you the program I used. It basically strips the Wii back down to the factory pre-release OS then incrementally upgrades it to the version you select.

Also, as promised here is my config file for the autoboot. I can't upload it but the file is: SD:\bootmii\bootmii.ini.

# BootMii config file

# Video mode, possible settings:

# NTSC, PAL50, PAL60, PROGRESSIVE

VIDEO=PROGRESSIVE

# Autoboot, possible settings:

# SYSMENU, HBC

AUTOBOOT=HBC

# Autoboot delay, in seconds:

# Default is 5

BOOTDELAY=0

hmmm yeah i actually did it the way they suggested 3 times... of course I'm not sure that any of those 3 times actually worked because I don't think the wii is recognizing my drive.. .It was really funny because the most recent thing I did caused the usb loader to recognize the sd card.. .so I accidentally formatted my usb card while it was running the usb loader from the card.. you can guess how that turned out. I backed up everything on my laptop so I was able to recover but I felt like a dumbass for a long time.

I'll try out that config today thx for that.

Yeah before I do anything on the Wii that I haven't done before I always back up my SD card. Stuff like that seems to happen more and more. I wouldn't dare have a USB drive in when testing :)

w00t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After a REALLY LONG TIME of messing with this stuff I have successfully been able to make backups to my portable 320GB WD Passport Essential drive and run games from it USING SYSTEM MENU 4.0!!!!!!

I have my hard drive partitioned into 1 FAT32 partition and 1 WBFS partition so I can still use it for a portable hard drive.. I have about 70 GB allocated for the backups. The backups actually take up less space than an ISO would so .. that's cool.

I also have a channel setup for it so I can load it.. I have bootmii on there to load up the system menu from which I can access the USB Loader and the homebrew channel..

HA NINTENDO... I WIN.. SUCK IT

EDIT: btw.. I used these tutorials and they worked: http://www.yafaze.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=46

To be honest, if you have an LU64 Wii I wouldn't even try to mod it. If something does go wrong there's nothing you can do recover from it whereas with the pre-LU64 consoles you can install the Boot2 version of Bootmii and reinstall the whole OS after a brick with no harm done.

I'm thinking about reformatting my Wii to factory settings and downgrading it to System Menu 4.1. Right now I'm on SM42. As it is now, I've loaded so many firmware hacks by so many different people that I really don't know how it's still running. Most Wii game backups work but I'd like to be able to account for every mod that's on there.

Lemm: Can you check these guides and verify that they should work. I've downgraded in the past (well before I knew the risks) and don't really see an issue with it so long as bootmii remains installed.

(Note that I'm not installing priiloader or the custom system menu channel, just the cios and backend mods)

If you have other guides that work please post links. The one you posted a while back doesn't work anymore.

I have modded an LU64 Wii (4.2) but not with the new 4.3 System Menu. I really haven't touched it in about two months. I'll have to look and see what I've got.

EDIT: Kip I'm sending you the last bit of good info that I've verified... it's old and works for 4.2. From there you can decide whether you want to use it or not.

Anyone modded a 4.3U Wii?

I got a new black Wii for my gf's b-day. I found some links but it's really hard to do offline because I have to find all the files beforehand. I know it's possible as long as you don't have 4.3K (or so I've read).

With the new Wiis, just be aware that you can't downgrade below 4.2U or install the firmware version of Bootmii. The DVD drives won't read backups either. Other than that it should be about the same if you go the USB route.

With 4.3U you'll have to use Indian Pwns or Smash Stack to install HBC/Bootmii.

Also worth noting, the new HBC has USB2 and DVDX support directly integrated so any application launched from it will natively get that support. This is especially useful for loading games from a USB drive as you won't have to always worry about getting the updated version after you update your Wii.

hmm.. I thought DVDX didn't work on the new Wiis because of a hardware fix restriction..

Anyway, I'll have to work on this when I can get a better internet connection (my gf's apartment). Luckily the Wii I bought her came with SSBB (used Wii from THE INTERNET).
