I have been playing it on and off since it started and if you are looking at sets only for what is currently legal in T1 or T2 then yes it's balanced. But doing what most of us do and dropping it into an already existing deck, screws with everything.

yeah, usually when i pick up a new set, i just make a new deck for that set. I tried to put the new cards with older decks but because of power creep and some of the older cards not being taken into account when they design the new sets your decks can become silly and for me i like that each deck contains a specific set and design to it. There's nothing wrong with mixing newer sets with older one, i just don't like it (this could be me being wierd)

my friends and i have gotten to where we pick a set and make a 50 dollar deck, it's a resonable expense, it's not very often, really we play with older decks, proxy decks or commons decks, all of which are cheap and easily made. I made a Bant style deck recently, it was expensive and really i don't enjoy it much more than i enjoy my giant-baiting deck. I did just make a blue/green fatties deck, i'll be playing around with it this week. I'm curious about making a squadron hawk deck just for the lulz, maybe that'll be next

giant baiting is so fun, probably could make one for about 20 bucks now, if your looking for something fun and cheap

My Vampire Deck is pretty decent in my opinion, my myr/artifact deck is on its way, and according to a friend my blue deck is homosexual

Scars is interesting. Infect on it's own is pretty powerful, and Metalcraft can be surprisingly resilient when built right. However, what I like most about the set is the abundance of powerful rares and uncommons with lots of potential, but are not very expensive (like Necrotic Ooze, Genesis Wave, Myr Galvanizer, Etched Champion, and Argentum Armor). Also, the intro packs for this set are the best intro packs for years.

Combining Metalcraft and Infect? That doesn't sound very good. Stephen (not Buttons, different Stephen) and Zack have solid Infect decks and I have a Metalcraft deck.

Infect doesn't really need it; it's faster than Conscription. For instance, a hand of Vector Asp, Groundswell, Groundswell, Swamp, Forest, Forest means you'll win on your 3rd turn if they have no answers/blockers.
