Phonetically Phamous (dice Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 So bumming internet off people means im wasting my years worth of xbox live b/c i cant directly plug in a ethernet cable. So im making the move to the wireless realm. My question is how strong is the signal for the official Microsoft Xbox adapter reach. And has anyone herd anything about non-microsoft connectors which are apparently alot better like said Linksys Wireless-G Game Adapter. Apparently its alot stronger and when your connecting to a house 3 over im going to juice it up any way i can. What are my options. I need something that is able to connect to unsecured networks, need something which does not required to be hardwired at initial set-up, need to carry a strong signal even if it compromises and gives me cancer in the long run... you get the idea. i was able to find this: http://cgi.ebay.com/MICROSOFT-XBOX-360-LIVE-WIRELESS-WIFI-NETWORK-ADAPTER_W0QQitemZ300356576149QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games_Accessories?hash=item45eea5a395 im sure their are mor out their? PS: see you all on MW2 soon Quote
Shingi Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 I haven't tried any other wireless adapters except for the official Microsoft one. The receiving on it is really good (don't know about 3 houses down) and I was able to get full signal from across the house. I'm pretty sure the official one is as good as most on board wireless cards that laptops have. So if you are able to pick it up on a laptop you should have a problem with the adapter. As far as going off brand if you can get the same thing do it because the Microsoft adapter is like $100 or it was when I bought it. I really haven't heard anything at all about non-official ones though. I do know that Microsoft likes you to use their products so they might try and hinder the effectiveness of other products. But that's up to you what you wanna do. Quote
Phonetically Phamous (dice Posted October 24, 2009 Author Report Posted October 24, 2009 thats the idea, id rather go with the microsoft one just b/c they tend to *edited* you down the line by paching out their loopholes. however, i obviously don't wont to waist $100 on this if the signal does not reach +60feet. any more feedback from you guys that know console networking would be awesome. i plan on making the dicession here soon. MasterP Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 For 3 houses down it's likely the only way you'll get an enjoyable experience is with some sort of Wireless N adapter which I don't think the 360 has. Might want to just man up and get Roadrunner light or DSL light for like $20/month. If you spend $100 on this adapter and it doesn't work that's almost half a years worth of internet you could have had. Quote
newrayz Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 (edited) just man up <3 dice im stealing internet from three houses down too, left my xbox back home though why don't you just buy it, and if it doesn't reach, return it and say it didn't work. It's not like you're lying lol Edited October 24, 2009 by NuRayZ Quote
MasterP Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 why don't you just buy it, and if it doesn't reach, return it and say it didn't work. It's not like you're lying lol If he buys it from Ebay or Amazon that won't work. Quote

newrayz Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 thats why you don't buy it from ebay... go to walmart drop 100 cash, check it and bring it back the same day. if it does work, bring it back anyway, and then buy it from ebay. easy peasy Quote
MasterP Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 I'm almost positive Walmart/Kmart/Sam's doesn't sell the adapter he's looking at in the OP. Best Buy might but you can't return working items like you can at Walmart. Circuit City might. Oh wait... Quote
newrayz Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 you mean this adapter? http://www.walmart.com/Microsoft-Xbox360-Wireless-Network-Adapter/ip/4196272 it should be there, unless the walmart near you guys is fail. Quote
newrayz Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 (edited) just checked, the closest walmart that has it near wcu is in Sylva Edited October 24, 2009 by NuRayZ Quote
Phonetically Phamous (dice Posted October 24, 2009 Author Report Posted October 24, 2009 thanks rays,, yeah i guess i'll be unethical this go around and get that one from walmart, test it. if its not strong nuff i'll return it. Quote
newrayz Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 (edited) hey man...technically walmart is raping small business all around america...talk about unethical. Just think of it as sticking it the man edit: wait if you want to be ethical, why are you stealing your neighbors neighbor's internet? LOL Edited October 24, 2009 by NuRayZ Quote
Phonetically Phamous (dice Posted October 24, 2009 Author Report Posted October 24, 2009 b/c they are paying for a service and arn't using it to its fullest. Im helping them get what they payed for. Quote
MasterP Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 Btw Dice, the item he posted is NOT the same as what you have in the OP. The OP is a Linksys that is likely much more powerful. The stock Microsoft is what he linked you at Walmart. Like I said, it's unlikely that any major retailed carries 3rd party adapters for consoles like that. hey man...technically walmart is raping small business all around america...talk about unethical. Just think of it as sticking it the man If by raping you mean being more efficient and offering lower prices for items in a capitalist market... Walmart started out as a mom-and-pop store. Don't begrudge someone because their business was a success. There's nothing wrong with what they're doing. Quote
newrayz Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 (edited) well "walmart operates in a way that increases government welfare spending, contributes to suburban sprawl, drives local companies out of business, decreases employment in both retail and manufacturing while lowering the wages in both sectors, and increases our tendency to consume natural resources that we do not need." above would be why one would hate on walmart. It turns out tho i don't hate it, and what i told dice was a half *edited* reason to stick it to them. (hence the lolface) besides the simple transaction of money regardless if he decides to keep the product or not is a benefit to walmart. they get to use his 100 dollars for a few hours Edited October 24, 2009 by NuRayZ Quote
newrayz Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 (edited) in your face my friend http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8466730 Pisgah Forest Wal-Mart# 1795 177 Forest Gate Drive Pisgah Forest, NC 28768 (828) 885-7900 not the same as the OP but could this still work? edit: okay so its a router not the adapter, pic looked the same...still a good find. That's a router, and you're an idiot. Btw, Walmart doesn't do anything someone else wouldn't have done otherwise. I don't know where you got that quote but whoever said it was obviously a liberal and obviously knew nothing about free market economies work or why Walmart's business model puts everyone else out of business. While they were bashing Walmart their significant other was likely at one buying groceries. Walmart's success has nothing to do with their size or prices. It entirely revolves around how they do business and set prices to barely achieve profit. Many people honestly think Harris Teeter has better food than other grocery stores but it's the exact same thing in the exact same packaging at 20% higher prices. The extra cost goes into their pocket. Walmart does the exact opposite and cuts profits down to a bare minimum but makes up for it in volume. Quote

MasterP Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 I mean I can fully understand why people hate Walmart and they do use sketchy tactics NOW but when you look at how they got to where they are now it's really nothing more than starting out small and taking expansion babysteps that gradually increased in size to giant leaps. The states that complain and care the least are the ones where they've been the longest. I can't ever remember there not being a Walmart where I live but just because there's a Walmart in Salisbury doesn't mean Food Lion, who's headquarters is in Salisbury, does any worse. Their prices are higher but not high enough to warrant driving the extra 15 minutes to the Walmart. Quote
Phonetically Phamous (dice Posted October 25, 2009 Author Report Posted October 25, 2009 thanks rays for looking on walmart .com for me. yeah i relize his link is not the same, but like yall said i guess i can return it if its out of range Quote
MasterP Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 It may not be so easy with console stuff. Microsoft isn't likely to be happy when they get a "bad" product back that's actually good. I'd look around for their return policy signs because I know electronics are different than the rest of the store. Quote
newrayz Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 (edited) you can't really return to walmart is pc games, or *edited* with cd keys and maybe like disposable stuff like food. Electronics are as easy to return as any other item; just as long as you have every item that came in the box. I guess if you want to be really careful, just ask one of the workers what the return policy is on it, they won't think it suspicious, they get asked that a million times a day im sure. now that i think about it, that's how i got 1.6 back in the day....lol just went into walmart and looked in the box to 'test' their cd key. a bit of a rebel without a cause back then. that was before they put most of the games in glass containers and added the sign "DO NOT OPEN BOXES".
