Amidst turmoil at Infinity Ward, developers of the Modern Warfare franchise, Activision announced the future path of the Call of Duty franchise.

The plans include the formation of a dedicated business unit that intends to expand the Call of Duty brand with the same focus seen in the publisher's Blizzard Entertainment business unit. This will include a focus on "high-margin digital online content" as well as reaching into new genres and with new digital business models – which some may read as a possibility for a CoD MMO.

"2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise," stated Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing. "In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players."

The company expects to release a new Call of Duty game from Treyarch this fall. In addition, Infinity Ward is in development on the first two downloadable map packs for Modern Warfare 2 for release in 2010.

Seeing the cash cow in Call of Duty, Activision has formed an entirely new development studio dedicated to a new game that will "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre" for release in 2011. The new studio is called Sledgehammer Games and is helmed by industry veterans Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey, both who previously worked on Dead Space for EA.

Yesterday, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare community was shook by the news that Infinity Ward bosses Vince Zampella and Jason West were dismissed by Activision over what the publisher termed as "breaches of contract and insubordination." BingeGamer believes that the disagreement came from withheld royalties from Modern Warfare 2, while Kotaku thinks that it might be down to creative differences.

So activision is turning the CoD series into Battlefield?

Here's a protip: unlock the dedicated servers you already coded into the game and sales will instantly spike.

yeah i'd buy it... but wtf...

TREYARCH is horrible.. I know they have a deal where treyarch and IW alternate every year but why let treyarch do it... I guess if you're planning on making a bad game let a bad developer do it cus WaW and CoD3 were such big successes...

and then dismiss the iw bosses.. prolly the only people who brought you the cod money

I like the old school CoD personally ... vCoD, UO, and 2

I know some people do, but I really don't like the leveling.. it's the only thing that made me keep playing mw and waw though.. until i found a leveling server on waw .. lol i got to level 65 will full prestige of 10 in about a week.. haven't played it since

First of all, there was NOTHING wrong with World at War. Treyarch made a great game in world at war, and I have the authority to say that because I've been playing CoD games since they were Wolfenstein (Lets get real, RTCW is the same engine, models, look and feel of COD1). The single player was epic of CoD caliber, the multiplayer was balanced, it had dedicated servers, had all the WW2 weapons you could want, the graphics kicked *edited*, and it brought us nazi zombies. The main reason people say it was bad is because of the WW2 aspect and them getting tired of WW2. Lets also not forget, WaW brought the PC users Prestige mode for the first time. Your opinion, not fact. In reality, there was no real flaws in WaW (at least not enough to make people bash it like they do). Now, did it have the fun factor that CoD2 did for a WW2 game? No, but that's like how GTA San Andreas didn't have the feel of Vice City. COD2 was all about skill. No perks, everyone had to deal with set classes, and that was okay. *edited* has evolved. It got boring for some. (Although Bolt action rifles will never measure to how kickass they were in CoD2).

Secondly, MW2 is a fantastic game. It really is, and people need to give up comparing it to battlefield BC2. I own both, and they are a totally different style of game. The only thing holding MW2 back from being perfection (in my eyes) was the lack of dedicated servers, and the addition of Tactical Nuke. It turned alot of fun players into people who go for nukes and rage when they fail. Heartbeat sensors should have never been considered for multiplayer either...but what are you gonna do.

Again, don't talk *edited* about Treyarch.

Perks and ww2 don't mix... once they take the skill out of the game... it sucks. People played the WW2 for the competitive nature. Leagues, scrims etc. Once it's dumbed down it sucks. That's why WAW is a bad game. They took a good thing and nubbed it out. Same reason I didn't like UO. Sure it made the game more interesting but it did it with a lot of bloat... artillery and things like that ruin the competitive nature of the game. vCoD and CoD2 are my two favorites. At least with UO you could decently remove some of the crap and it remained competitive .. plus it introduced CTF so I'd have to put that in the top 3 CoD as well.

All in all.. IMO Treyarch takes a good thing.. bloats it up.. makes it run worse and packages it as another CoD.. That's why i don't like treyarch

PS. I've been playing CoD just as long if not more than you have Raven

I mean im not gonna lie I have played CoD games mostly for the single player with minor dabs in multi and I have enjoyed WaW and MW2 even though their multiplayer hasn't been as much of a hit.

The MP40? Really? Give me an MP44, Thompson, or Sten and I'll kick ANY MP40 *edited*s *edited*. Hell, give me a Kar98k and I'll kick his *edited* from a mile away. I played CoD2 since its release (still do), and I have never seen any balance issues. It was the perfect WW2 experience.

West & Zampella file lawsuit against Activision

Modern Warfare 2 co-creators Jason West and Vince Zampella, fired for alleged insubordination on Tuesday in a surprise move that shocked the entire industry, filed a strongly worded lawsuit with a California court today.

The filing described Activision as demonstrating "astonishing arrogance and unbridled greed," and accuses the company of terminating the pair in order to avoid paying them "substantial" royalties from last year's Modern Warfare 2 release, heralded as the biggest launch in entertainment history.

"Instead of thinking, lauding, or just plain paying Messers. West and Zampella for giving Activision the most successful entertainment product ever offered to the public," the filing says, "last month Activision hired lawyers to conduct a pretextual 'investigation' into unstated and unsubstantiated charges of 'insubordination' and 'breach of fiduciary duty.'"

Ah yes. I heard of that event a while ago. I'm interested in how it plays out. I'm not a terribly big fan but i wouldn't mind seeing someone sweat XD. I doubt anything will truly be accomplished. They will either get a little money or the situation will disappear.

I think it's ironic that the developers of CoD6 made all these online gameplay changes at the behest of Activision then they turn around and stab the devs in the back.

What they should have done to begin with is tell Activision to STFU and let them make the game in a fashion they know *ALL* gamers will enjoy. Something along the lines of the matchmaking system Microsoft uses for it's Windows Live XBOX ports, incorporating a dedicated server AND automatic matchmaking system.

Regardless, they aren't going to get anything and Activision will have this swept under the rug. If there's one thing Activision has done well after all these years it's screw devs and make litigation against them disappear.
