Aion

Recommended Posts

Ok so,

I've been playing Aion for 3 months. I've been playing it at school no problems until today, 9/17/10. I went AFK while logged into the game and it automatically dc'd me. When i came back i went to launch it again and i keep getting this error

*The server does not support the necessary HTTP protocol. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) requires that the server support the Range protocol header.

I tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling but when I go to download it the same error pops up.

There is a support thread that I found with the same problem here:

http://www.aionsource.com/topic/30331-the-server-does-not-support-the-necessary-http-protocol-background-intelligent-trans/

but there is no real answer besides that this problem may have been caused due to ports being blocked by a firewall on our school routers.....is there anyone that can shed light on this or possibly works in IT that can help me? :|

Thanks,

Rossman

That error is most common when behind an improperly configured proxy, gateway, or firewall. I think it's safe to assume what the cause is...

I'm surprised that you'd get that type of error on a game though, typically you get that one on servers.

There's not much you can do. If you call the help desk you'll get a generic "we're sorry but we can't help you" and so far all efforts to get other games fixed have fallen on deaf ears.

Try calling the help desk and when they can't help you ask to be transfered to someone who can or ask for contact info for someone in networking.

k, sounds good. Ty.

Did some reading and maybe with all the network "upgrading" aka porn removing/blocking, they closed some in/outbound ports.

"Aion requires that TCP ports 80, 2106, 7777 and 10241 are fully unrestricted and accessible inbound and out."

What i dont get is it worked fine earlier today and the rest of the last month WDF. >=|

TCP 80 is probably where you're having issues, it's the port the filter focuses on. If you talk to someone in networking be sure to have those ports handy.

The most likely reason it stopped is because the filter is semi-intelligent. If it sees that a packet on port 80 has certain characteristics similar to those it's supposed to block it may adjust its filtering parameters to include that. Maybe when you went afk the server lagged in a weird way or sent a funky packet. The internet isn't exactly as reliable and error free as it used to be.

Thanks P.

and i totally agree with the internet not being as reliable. Ive noticed a huge downgrade in the speed and connection here on campus from last year. Ever since they hired a Director or IT or something, everything has slowed down a ton.

I was talking about the internet in general but yeah you aren't the first to comment on the campus internet feeling slower than it did last year.

ight P got an update.

Been talking to the Aion tech people and they determined its not my computer, its the school network. Went to IT and they gave me the "Oh, if we had any network changes or port filtering done, I don't know about it. " and the classic "Well technically WCU doesn't support gaming so I can't really help you."

now wdf do i do?

Did you talk to an actual "adult" or one of the student workers? Judging by the weasely, cop-out reply you got it sounds like you talked to the guy who runs that desk.

The kids don't know jack. If you ever have a problem with the network or just want to escallate your problem to get a reply from someone who knows wtf a computer is, ask for Andy. Don't tell them I told you to though. :)

Any updates on this?

I've been thinking about going out and buying Aion, but I don't want to get back on campus after the break and find out I can't play it :/

Would have been better for everyone if ITS cared while they had a gamer on staff <_>

If he has any specific questions about game traffic or packeting or what ports a game uses tell him to give me a call. I'm sure he won't but the offer's out there.
