Sony finally tells the world why they took PSN down.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/116/1164186p1.html

Losing data on 75 million users may be a new world record.

I'll say this much, if indeed credit card data was stolen Sony is guaranteed to be class-actioned. A US senator has taken interest in this as well and you can bet that doesn't bode well for them either. He thinks Sony should pony up and pay for every user to get identity theft and credit monitoring for 2 years. For a company that's already in the red, such an action would be devastating.

I'm extremely upset.

What idiot stores passwords??!?!?! Really? It's the first thing you learn about any type of login security. You don't store the password. You make a hash or an md5 of the password and store that. How they hell am I ever supposed to trust these people again?

Thankfully my address and cc# info is changing soon anyway.. but wtf!!!!

This is really ridiculous.. and the fact that they waited 6 days to tell everyone.

as the old saying goes "ya get what ya pay for", i hate to say it but this is why i endorse LIVE, although i did wish it was cheaper

I don't think this has anything to do with it...

I encrypted class projects better than sony has done here.. this is just being irresponsible. They get their money out of people that continue to buy the system / the licensed games. They don't have the benefits of live getting new releases first or all the features.. Hell PSN users can't even change their display name. I don't care about that.. because "you get what you pay for".

This is something else.. security should be a standard.

What if Facebook had this type of security? It's free.

Exactly.

Correction, they're still losing money on each console sale and Sony's videogame division (aka Networking or wtfever they use to hide it on the books) had a net loss of almost $1 billion in FY 2011. That's console, games, accessories, everything. They're actually bleeding more money than MS is at this point, even with RROD losses figured in.

I agree 100% that security is one of those things that's just expected, regardless of whether or not the service is paid-for or free. Perfect example is Steam. The service itself is free and there's very few games that you are required to buy through it but the security is there regardless of where you choose to buy games through them or not. This is almost like the Apple OS4 screw up, they thought no one would ever find out so when someone did they were caught with their pants down, well Sony never thought anyone could hack into their internal servers so when someone did they had absolutely no safeguards on the data.

I endorse PC because we don't have a magic network that can shut down and stop our fun.

Even when Steam has issues, you can start it in offline mode and still play most of the games online.

The few times it went down you could always manually connect to servers using their ip and games that use another multiplayer service, like gamespy, still worked fine.

And after the lies and mis-information thus far on this you're still believing their excuses?

Well, that is when they say it will be fully operational again.. which is not shocking at all considering they had to redesign almost the whole thing from the ground up.

I'm counting on them having multiplayer available at least a week before that.. I really believe that will happen.

Did you drink some of josrocket's coolaid?

They lost all the SOE accounts as well. I think windows firewall could have done a better job than what they had.

All I was saying is that I will get to play multiplayer ps3 games before the end of May. I don't see how that should be incredibly wrong or how I've somehow become a fanboy.
