Well I've had enough of my $250 craptop and looking to upgrade within the month. I have a soft budget of around $1200. I'm looking for a 15" or smaller. Mainly going to use it for video editing (picked up one of those awesome little gopro cams a few months back). It would be awesome to have usb 3.0. Must have hdmi out. Low heat soke into my balls is also a plus as i use the pc mostly on my lap/stomach. I'm not a fan of external HD's so something that has a duel would be a plus. SSD's worth it? I'm not particular to a brand/model.

Just looking for pointers in the right direction as i'm just now starting my search for something thats a good bang for the buck.. wonder is that .edu email will come in handy?

Three rules of laptop buying:

1. Don't

2. Buy

3. Dell

(This INCLUDES Alienware)

I haz a dell e6500 (business class) that has been rocking for over 3 years now. Running strong. Even won a WCU css tourney with it.. of course it can't play anything else more demanding but it doesn't have a dedicated video card.

aka dice you don't play pc games, you could back off the hardware specs a bit?

That's about what my dad paid for a non-gaming core i5 with a 10 hour battery, a 3 year on site warranty with accidental damage protection, and one of those $100 home/car/airplane power adapters.

Also, why did you pay for the recovery media? You could've PM'd me and I'd hook you up B)

I will say that the Sandy Bridge HPs are really nice laptops. I don't know how well they hold up but their overall performance with Windows7 is stellar.

found a good deal, but worried about the heat and size. Code for my record (nbdq13114)

As this compares to the above envy:

DV6T: $200 cheaper

same OS

same i7

Graphics (ENVY: DDR3 Radeon 6630 vs DV6T: GDDR5 Radeon 6770M) not sure which is better

same ram

same HD

display same resolution but 14.5" vs 15.6"

DV6T has BluRay (not that i care)
