I'm thinking of trading in my desktop for what I can get and putting that towards a laptop, and I'm wondering what kind of price I might be able to fetch for it... So, just to survey the field, if you were looking around at computers, what would you expect to pay for this? I'll have to tally up how much the parts in it, or at least similar parts, would go for today and name a starting price. But hell, I'd be really content with $1,600 Quote
Falcon Posted September 16, 2007 Author Report Posted September 16, 2007 similar/identical parts, if you grab them from newegg (where possible): mobo - 100 cpu - 100 psu - 150 case - 120 ram - 35 hdd - 50 video - 100 sound - 130 tuner - 65 modem - 10 dvd - 30 dvd w/lightscribe - 30 floppy - 7 cpu heatsink - 45 keyboard/mouse combo - 35 windows xp pro - 140 windows xp x64 - 140 windows vista business 64-bit - 300 total on parts alone: $1,587 (and yes these are current prices of the hardware that's in it, not what they were when i put this together or what similarly high-end things today would be ) Quote

The only things I really see bumping up the price of your system though are the OS's, which is a bit silly here on campus as well as for other people. Quote

Nickname Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 Well let's consider I just built a computer with: amd x2 5200+ gigabyte am2 motherboard 2gb g.skill ddr2-800 320gb WD SATA hdd 20x Lite-on SATA DVD burner evga 8800gts 320mb aspire x-dreamer 2 case w/powersupply for $775; so let's reevaluate your pricing: case: $110 motherboard: your mobo doesn't support core 2; $50 max cpu: you can buy an amd 3800+, faster than the p4 650 for $50 new cpu fan: wouldn't consider it much of a selling feature, but I'll give it $35 PSU: its $100 new on newegg RAM: I'll go with your $35 HDD: " " $50 video: definitly old hardware at this point, maybe $80 sound: you can buy an x-fi for $50, yours is worth more like $30 tuner: $50 modem: $0 DVD drives: $25 each floppy: $7 mouse/keyboard: GE? I'll give it $25 OSs: $0 Ok that brings our new total to: $672; I'd say you could probably get $700 for it. But wait, my $775 machine is faster in every way...
